چکیده

Previously we published a dynamical model E. Brown and G. Ahlers, Phys. Fluids 20, 075101 2008 for the large-scale-circulation LSC dynamics of Rayleigh–Bénard convection in cylindrical containers. The model consists of a pair of stochastic ordinary differential equations, motivated by the Navier–Stokes equations, one each for the strength and the orientation 0 of the LSC. Here we extend it to cases where the rotational invariance of the system is broken by one of several physically relevant perturbations. As an example of this symmetry breaking we present experimental measurements of the LSC dynamics for a container tilted relative to gravity. In that case the model predicts that the buoyancy of the thermal boundary layers encourages fluid to travel along the steepest slope, that it locks the LSC in this direction, and that it strengthens the flow, as seen in experiments. The increase in LSC strength is shown to be responsible for the observed suppression of cessations and azimuthal fluctuations. We predict and observe that for large enough tilt angles, the restoring force that aligns the flow with the slope is strong enough to cause oscillations of the LSC around this orientation. This planar oscillation mode is different from coherent torsional oscillations that have been observed previously. The model was applied also to containers with elliptical cross sections and predicts that the pressure due to the side wall forces the flow into a preferred orientation in the direction of the longest diameter. When the ellipticity is large enough, then oscillations around this orientation are predicted. The model shows that various azimuthal asymmetries will lock the LSC orientation. However, only those that act on the -equation such as tilting relative to gravity will enhance the LSC strength and suppress cessations and other azimuthal dynamics. Those that affect only the 0 equation, such as an interaction with Earth’s Coriolis force, will align the flow but will not influence its strength and the frequency of cessations. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. A model of diffusion in a potential well for the dynamics of the large-scale circulation in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection

Experimental measurements of properties of the large-scale circulation LSC in turbulent convection of a fluid heated from below in a cylindrical container of aspect ratio 1 are presented and used to test a model of diffusion in a potential well for the LSC. The model consists of a pair of stochastic ordinary differential equations motivated by the Navier–Stokes equations. The two coupled equati...

Torsional oscillations of the large-scale circulation in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection

Measurements over the Rayleigh-number range 10 <∼R<∼ 10 and Prandtl-number range 4.4<∼ σ <∼ 29 that determine the torsional nature and amplitude of the oscillatory mode of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection are presented. For cylindrical samples of aspect ratio Γ =1 the mode consists of an azimuthal twist of the near-vertical LSC circulation plane, with th...

Effect of the Earth’s Coriolis force on the large-scale circulation of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We present measurements of the large-scale circulation LSC of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in water-filled cylindrical samples of heights equal to their diameters. The orientation of the LSC had an irregular time dependence, but revealed a net azimuthal rotation with an average period of about 3 days for Rayleigh numbers R 1010. On average there was also a tendency for the LSC to be ali...

Large-scale circulation model for turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection.

A model for the large-scale-circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in cylindrical samples is presented. It consists of two physically motivated stochastic ordinary differential equations, one each for the strength and the azimuthal orientation of the LSC. Stochastic forces represent phenomenologically the influence of turbulent fluctuations. Consistent with measurements, the ...

Rotations and cessations of the large-scale circulation in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection

We present a broad range of measurements of the angular orientation θ0(t) of the largescale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection as a function of time. We used two cylindrical samples of different overall sizes, but each with its diameter nearly equal to its height. The fluid was water with a Prandtl number of 4.38. The time series θ0(t) consisted of meanderings similar to ...
